A village visit to a nearby Samburu homestead is a worthwhile activity.

Samburu offers great wildlife viewing and four of the Big five are present. Rhinos are absent, but big herds of elephant cross the reserve. Of the big cats, leopards are very rewarding with some habituated individuals giving high-quality sightings. Did You Know?

Ol Pejeta conservancy has 30 southern whites. The first animals were introduced into Ol Pejeta in 2005. The presence of southern whites on the Conservancy was instrumental in enabling the translocate northern white rhino from Dvur Kralove Zoo to settle into African life when they arrived from the Czech Republic in 2009. Introducing the newcomers to random groups of wild southern whites in their natural environment evoked natural behavior amongst them. Over time, the natural traits became more prominent – even motivating the northern white to begin mating.

There is actually no colour difference between white and black rhino. The name is said to have been a mistranslation of the Afrikaans word ‘weit’ meaning ‘wide’ – which refers to their square shaped lips used for grazing. This is the main distinction between white rhino and black, which have a hooked lip for browsing.

      Chimpanzee Sanctuary

The chimpanzees’ natural home range spans from Senegal on the West African coast, through the central forested belt of Africa, to Uganda. They are not native to Kenya, but when a rescue centre in Burundi had to be closed due to the civil war outbreak in 1993 – Ol Pejeta opened its doors.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary was established with an agreement between the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and the Jane Goodall Institute. The aim – to provide lifelong refuge to orphaned and abused chimpanzees from West and Central Africa. Over the last decade, Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary has been compelled to keep accepting chimpanzees rescued from traumatic situations – bringing the total number of chimpanzees in the Sanctuary to 36. Many are confiscated from cramped and unnatural living conditions, and many arrive with horrific injuries sustained from abuse at the hands of humans. Here at Sweetwaters, they get a chance to start over at Sweetwater Serena lodge.
